Ballroom: Making It To The Finals

A film by Edgar Franco
Produced by FD Productions
Toronto 2007

Introduction - This is the documentary about Ballroom dancers and Ballroom teachers struggling to make it in a business that is relatively young in Canada. As Ballroom Dancing enjoys a boost from media shows like DANCING WITH THE STARS, how does that impact real dancers here in Canada?

There are many different opinions about the Ballroom dancing industry here in Canada, some favorable, some critical. It is an industry that has, for a long time, remained somewhat unknown – how will becoming popular force it to change? Will it be for the better, or for the worse?

In the world of dancing Canadians compete among the best dancers, but we have no support from the government or the private sector. It’s status as a sport has still not been established, but anyone who has danced competitively knows just how athletic it truly is, and even more important, the impact it has on one’s health. Dancing is not only good for the body, but it brings people together.

Documentary Film

Franco Dance and Franco Productions are currently developing a documentary about Salsa dancers in Toronto struggling to make it to the top at the World Dance Competition in Switzerland.

Following some of the top dancers in the city, the film will explore what it means to be a salsa dancer in Canada, what it takes to achieve a dream, and the status of salsa dance as an emerging art.

This will be the second documentary by dancer and filmmaker Edgar Franco, who is currently completing his first film, 'Los Artesanos', which follows three young Ecuadorian men who hope that their handicrafts will bring them a better life.

Franco Productions is interested in producing documentary films that reflect the constant change in Canadian culture, where multiculturalism is more than a catch phrase. The complex relationship between art and culture in a cross-cultured world, and the impact the migration of art has on the form itself and the cultures it touches, are topics of particular interest to Franco Productions.

Franco Productions is constantly seeking out new partners and support from the community. To get involved, please contact us at 416 538 7777 or info@francodance.com.
